Happy National Donut Day! I’m not too big on sweets but I can never say no to a fluffy donut…I mean, who can? Unfortunately, this year National Donut Day is during Ramadan and since I’m fasting I can’t eat one until the sun goes down but that doesn’t mean I can have one later 🙂
I was so excited to go to Sugar Shack this morning that I went to bed early last night (this usually doesn’t happen). I got there around 8:30 this morning (6/2/2017) and obviously there was a line but it wasn’t that bad. Sugar Shack is my favorite donut shop around the DMV area so far but I was kind of disappointed today. I thought that they would have their regular selection but I found it to be pretty boring this time. Usually they have rainbow sprinkles, M&Ms, gummy worms etc. This time I ended up getting the chocolate with orange sprinkles (come on Sugar Shack, it’s not Halloween), chocolate with coconut shavings, somoa, Butterfinger, strawberry glazed and I think watermelon. When I asked why they didn’t have all the fun and usual flavors, the gentleman who was helping me said that since it’s National Donut Day, the simple glazed ones are the easiest ones to make. He told me that they will have all their “regular” flavors and toppings tomorrow and that I could always come back which is true…but today is National Donut Day!!!
Overall, I was disappointed today (maybe because I had such high expectations) but I will definitely be going back. I still love you Sugar Shack!
Whoever came up with the idea of transforming bite size sushi rolls into one large roll or burrito deserves recognition! I stopped by Rolls By U in Arlington, Virginia a few weeks ago for a quick bite and oh my goodness, it was delicious! I ordered the “By U Crunch” signature rito (shrimp tempura, crabstick, salad cucumber, avocado, crunch, spicy mayo and I added purple cabbage) and I loved it! It had a crunchy consistency and full of flavor. Â
The place is nice and clean. The food is fresh (I even got to see them cutting a salmon) The staff was extremely friendly, especially the cashier (Enkhuul) who asked why I was taking photos and then asked if she could be in my blog 🙂
Overall, loved this place! Definitely will be back.
Doughnuts! Who doesn’t love doughnuts? Soft, fluffy, sugary goodness in your mouth.  My best friends and I decided to try Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken a few weeks ago in Falls Church, VA.  I don’t know about everyone else, but I LOVE fried foods and doughnuts so when the girls mentioned this place I got excited!
We got there around 8:20 p.m (they close at 9:00 p.m) and there were a few other customers when we got there.  The employees were warm and welcoming. I ordered the chicken strips combo with tater tots and a drink.  I got the buffalo and ranch sauce on the side (all sauces are made in house). My dinner came out very quickly which made me wonder if they actually fried it right away or if it was just sitting there.  Nonetheless, I loved the tater tots and I liked the chicken strips.  When I think of fried chicken, I think of a crispy and crunchy consistency in my mouth and Astro’s chicken didn’t fulfill that for me.  I thought the chicken was a little too oily by itself but when dipped into the sauces it was much better.
Enough about the chicken! What about the doughnuts? Well…unfortunately I didn’t really have luck with the doughnuts.  Their signature Crème Brûlée doughnut was sold out.  I ended up ordering two glazed doughnuts, one orange blossom with pistachios, one peanut butter and jelly and one berry doughnut (my options were very limited).  I brought the doughnuts over to my friends and to be completely honest, none of them said, “ wow these doughnuts are amazing.”.  They all thought they were mediocre but nothing special.  I would say that the only thing I liked about them was there fluffiness. Everyone at the table agreed that they’ve had better doughnuts before.
Overall, I wasn’t very impressed with the chicken or the doughnuts.  However, in all fairness I will definitely try it again during the day because like I said, their signature doughnut was sold out and we did go right before closing.
